Attorney General Anil Nandlall yesterday said that the PPP/C has no immediate plans to approach the High Court to challenge aspects of the just concluded general and regional elections but made it clear that this is an option that can be used once the need arises.
“As far as I am aware as of now the party is not preparing anything to go to court, not that we will not go to court if the eventuality arises if we see it as necessary”, Nandlall, the PPP/C’s lead attorney told reporters at Freedom House yesterday.
Late Tuesday and for parts of yesterday there were reports circulating that the party which is seeking another term in office was planning to file a court action that could possibly see a delay in the announcement of the results.
Questioned about the possibility of heading to the courts, he stressed that all he is saying at this point is that the party has not reached that stage and that as of now such a course of action is unnecessary.
“As of now there seem to be some view out there that the PPP wants to delay the declaration of the results. We reject that notion. We are exercising the legal options which are available to ensure the integrity of the process that is all we are doing”, he stressed.
Nandlall told reporters that he has been hearing a variety of things which are not being contemplated at the moment and added that if there is a legal wrong then a remedy will be sought.
