Amid continuing PPP/C efforts to challenge the results of the 2015 general elections, Swami Aksharananda today issued a statement calling on the ruling party to accept the result that it had lost the election and to move on.
The statement follows:
Following my earlier call for parties to accept the results of the general elections of 2015, without demand for recount and court challenges, I urge the PPP to concede the elections and let us move on with the task of healing and reconciliation.
We will be faced with a great many challenges in nation building, and I strongly believe that to concede the elections at this stage could be a major step in that direction.
We have gone through weeks of bruising campaigning and the population needs a respite from the fear and tension that seem to be mounting with the passing of every hour.
The interest of the nation must take precedent over the interest of party. President Ramotar is a person who is highly regarded for his humane qualities, and he should ensure that his reputation is not tarnished. I urge him to call the coalition presidential candidate, Mr. Granger, and congratulate him.
To be magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat is a great tradition of our ancestors, and graciously conceding the elections will probably be a first in Guyana troubled politics.
