Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Treasurer Garfield Wiltshire said that he expects a very competitive tournament when the entity stages its Junior National Championships from May 27th-31st at the Georgetown Club facility on Camp Street.
In an invited comment to Stabroek Sports, the former Caribbean champion said that he expects fierce competition throughout every section of the tournament, especially in the emerging Boy’s u-11 division, which is slated to crown a new champion.
He noted that currently Nyron Joseph is the u-19 Boy’s titlist and that he will be challenged for the accolade by Benjamin Mekdeci, who presently is the u-17 champion.
According to Wiltshire, the u-15 accolade is currently in the possession of the relatively unknown Shomani Griffith, while the u-13 titlist is the previous u-11 champion Shomari Wiltshire.
On the female side, the GSA Treasurer said that Akeila Wiltshire is the current holder of the u-19 accolade and will be challenged by sibling Larissa Wiltshire who previously held the position of u-17 champion, a division that is now without a titlist.
He noted that Rebecca Lowe is the current u-15 champion while Makeda Harding and Madison Fernandes currently hold the titles in the u-13 and u-11 section correspondingly.
Asked if Guyana can secure their 11th consecutive overall team title at the impending Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) tourney in Barbados from July 17th-26th, he declared that it’s getting harder to achieve the accolade and that he expects it to be extremely close and competitive during the event .
He noted that it’s difficult to say if Guyana will retain the title as this is due to the constant improvement of the other competing nations. However he noted that Guyana’s main objective is always to claim the overall title.
