The Guyana Elections Commission has confirmed that it will declare final results of the close 2015 general elections at midday at its Kingston headquarters followed by the swearing in of President-elect David Granger at Parliament Building.
It will mark the culmination of one of the most bitterly contested elections in recent decades, marred by the refusal of the incumbent PPP/C to accept the results.
This is the PPP/C’s first outright loss since 1992 after an unbroken run in government of 22+ years. Its loss stemmed from the decision of APNU – in which the PNC is the main constituent – and the AFC to form an alliance to contest the general elections with Granger as presidential candidate and former PPP stalwart Moses Nagamootoo as prime ministerial candidate.
Combined, APNU and the AFC held a one-seat majority in the 10th Parliament that emerged from the 2011 elections. President Donald Ramotar was forced to call early elections on May 11, 2015 after the AFC signalled its intention to move a motion of no confidence against the government.
