Dear Editor,
Through the courtesy of your letters column, allow me to congratulate APNU+AFC in their victory at the general elections; it has been long in the making and even longer in the coming.
For most Guyanese at home and abroad, it is an historic event, to be celebrated not for what has been achieved at the polls − no small feat to be sure after 22 years of PPP/C incumbency − rather, it should be celebrated for the opportunities it brings in the immediate next five years.
I am delighted that President-elect Granger has chosen to emphasize the abolishment of poverty and hatred as a cornerstone of his presidency in his address to his supporters in Queenstown. More importantly, however, it is central to an economically reinvigorated Guyana that his message resonates with all Guyanese. To this end, the natural inclination of some to seek recompense should be resisted and requires reflection; hence, the no small part played by those Guyanese whose embrace of peace, inclusion, and justice for all Guyanese irrespective of party affiliation in making this all-critical swing at the polls a reality should not go amiss.
Yours faithfully,
Claude V Chang
