Security stepped up at ministries

Police from the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) have been placed at government ministries in the city to strengthen security there.

Checks by Stabroek News yesterday at the ministries of Finance, Public Works, Culture, Youth and Sport, Home Affairs, Natural Resources and the Environment and Housing and Water showed armed TSU officers on duty in their compounds.

A police official explained to Stabroek News that the instructions for deployment of the armed police came from Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud and that it was to prevent the removal of important documents from the buildings.

President David Granger had told Stabroek News on Saturday that the first of his meetings after his swearing in was with the Commissioner of Police and Brigadier Mark Phillips of the Guyana Defence Force. It is not clear if the directive to have the government ministries manned by TSU personnel was discussed.

However, this newspaper understands that the deployment of the officers only came yesterday, one day after Granger was sworn in as the eighth executive president of Guyana.
