Change of gov’t could mean progress for GCB – Drubahadur

Drubahadur, President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday congratulated the newly-elected government and said that he hopes that the GCB and the government can work towards a forging good relations in order to improve the sport in Guyana.

Speaking briefly with Stabroek Sports yesterday, the GCB head firstly pointed out that the board does not get into politics but is rather keen on ensuring that cricket is played in and around the country.

“First of all we (the GCB) don’t get involved with politics. We have a mandate and that is to ensure cricket is played in Guyana and that is what we do,” he added.

Shifting gears to the Cricket Administration Bill which was passed last year by the previous government and endorsed at that time by then opposition, A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), Drubahadur, who explained that the matter of the bill was currently in court, said he thinks the change of government could mean progress for the GCB adding that he is optimistic of a good outcome in the future with the new government as well as the future Sports Minister.

“In terms of the bill we did mount a challenge which is in court and we are awaiting decisions because when the bill came into law certain aspects we thought shouldn’t be there. I hope and wish and I’m very optimistic that together we can move forward.

“Generally, I want more to be done for sports in Guyana but we have to allow them (the APNU/AFC) a chance to settle and come up with their own positions. At a board level, we plan to reach the new Sports Minister and discuss a way because they were always interested so now that they are in and they have knowledge, we can go forward,” he concluded.

The GCB, over the past few months, had cried out for more support from the previous government, stating that the Cricket Administration Bill was somewhat flawed while adding that little support had come from the government.
