Four women hockey players were robbed early yesterday morning at Croal and Oronoque streets, Georgetown after returning home from a tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.
The robbery occurred at 1.50 am yesterday when the vehicle that was transporting the women stopped to drop off one of their teammates.
The driver of the vehicle, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, stated that he had stopped the vehicle to drop off the hockey player, when someone pulled open his door and pointed a gun in his face. “He told us to shut up and don’t scream,” the driver recalled.
He stated that there were three men, two of whom were armed. He recalled one of them searching the vehicle while he was being held up by another one.
“The third one ran after the girl and told her to open her gate but she didn’t listen and she run inside her house and bolt the door,” he stated.
He was unaware if he was being trailed by the men since they left the Cheddi Jagan International Airport at Timehri. But he did state that he noticed a white Toyota vehicle parked along Oronoque Street. “I don’t know if it was following us or not. We were all focused on the girl getting into her yard,” he noted.
The driver stated that gunmen escaped with the girls’ luggage, hockey gears, cell phones and cash. “Right now all of us left in shock. Them girls are traumatized by the whole incident,” he said.
After the robbery, the driver said he contacted his uncle, who in turn informed the Alberttown Police Station. The matter is currently being investigated by the police. When Stabroek News called at the residence of one of the young women, she was too traumatized to speak.
