A Cuban national was fined yesterday after he admitted to overstaying in Guyana.
The charge against Francisco Gonsalves stated that from January 6 to May 15, 2015, he failed to comply with the conditions under which permission was granted for him to stay in Guyana, from December 5, 2014 to January 6, 2015.
The unrepresented man, with the aid of a translator, told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that he was employed by a woman during his designated stay in Guyana but she failed to pay him and as a result he was forced to stay in the country.
Gonsalves was ordered to pay a $30,000 fine or serve a two-week jail sentence.
