Dear Editor,
Humility is a gift not many of us have, but should strive for. Now that the APNU+AFC has won the elections and the swearing-in has been completed, many of us need to shed our election ‘habits’ and just move forward into this new week. To the supporters of APNU+AFC, I say that they had their time to celebrate and now it’s time to move on to more serious work—nation building.
The supporters of the PPP/C, as I mentioned in earlier posts, should not feel lost or abandoned. The party has made it clear that it will continue to fight for the working class people in the Parliament, with its 32 seats. They, too, are needed to build this nation, and I am sure this was expressed by President David Granger. Former president Donald Ramotar and his former administration will always have a place in our hearts, but we have to focus on the present now. Like humility, it is also a gift to reach out across the divide. I reiterate how important it is for the APNU+AFC to reach out to the 201,000 Guyanese who voted for the PPP/C, and so must the APNU+AFC supporters. Campaigning is over. We need not be segregated any more. We may have made our separate choices. The time for flaunting party paraphernalia is over. These materials should be taken down from across our country as well. They no longer serve any purpose other than to remind us of how divided this election made us.
In fact, if President Granger’s presidency is to be successful, he needs the PPP/C supporters on board. He needs you and he needs me! And there should be no one in the Granger administration who believes or promotes otherwise. PPP/C supporters will always hold fast to the tenets of their party. If the election was indeed rigged, then everything that is hidden will surely come to light. Good always overpowers evil. But nation building cannot come to a standstill. I would like to see the Granger administration get right on to work and fulfil the promises made in its 100- day plan. Being impartial is not easy. Not many of us can do it. I have watched some of our media houses be very anti-PPP during the various PPP/C administrations. They held the government accountable in every way. I hope they continue this trend. I have confidence that they will.
Finally, the official inauguration of President Granger at the National Stadium in Georgetown on Independence Day (May 26, 2015) should be a national, and not APNU+AFC celebration, where all Guyanese should be welcome and feel comfortable attending. Hence, we should be devoid of any party materials and hold to one common symbol, our national flag.
Yours faithfully,
Leon Suseran
