An East Coast Demerara man was yesterday sent to jail for six months after he admitted to stealing from a Georgetown store.
Ovid Chester, 46, of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, was read two charges by Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 11.
It was alleged that on May 19th, on Regent Street, Chester stole two jerseys and four hats, all valued $1,500 and belonging to Rashad Baksh. It was also alleged that on the same day, on Albert Street, Chester damaged the rear glass of a car, which was valued at $11,400 and which was the property of Ramchand Mangru. Chester admitted to the charges but he offered an explanation for the damage to property charge.
He explained that he was dodging a blow from another man, who was armed with a piece of wood. Instead of hitting him, he said his assailant connected with the car, resulting in the damage.
After listening to his explanation, the magistrate told Chester that she would record a not guilty plea on his behalf for the charge.
In relation to the theft, Prosecutor Adduni Inniss told the court that Chester was caught by the Manager of the Fabric World Store, on Regent Street, in the act of stealing the items mentioned in the charge.
He was subsequently sentenced to six months for the larceny. He was ordered to return to court on June 11th for a hearing in the damage to property matter.
