After pleading guilty and being sentenced to six months in prison for simple larceny, Damion James yesterday thanked the magistrate for being fair.
James was charged with stealing a BlackBerry smartphone, which was the property of Dexter McLean, on February 14, on Regent Street.
The defendant told Magistrate Alex Moore that he was guilty when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 10 yesterday.
The magistrate, after discovering that James was previously convicted for similar charges, informed the man that he would not be released on the condition that he compensate the victim for the stolen article since he might be allowing the accused to dig one hole to fill another.
Magistrate Moore also informed that he would normally impose the maximum sentence on a repeat offender but after he considered James’ immediate plea, which did not waste the court’s time, he opted to sentence him to six months in prison.
As he was being escorted out of the court in shackles, James thanked the magistrate for being fair and then wished him all the best for however long he continues to serve as a magistrate.
