The United States says it looks forward to working with new president David Granger and the APNU+AFC administration.
“We also look forward to supporting President Granger’s efforts to promote inclusive governance and national development,” Marie Harf, Deputy Spokesperson in the US State Department, said in a statement.
Harf also expressed appreciation to former president Donald Ramotar and the members of his government for their service to Guyana. “President Ramotar is to be congratulated for the numerous achievements that his government made under his leadership,” she said.
In addition, Harf commended the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) for conducting a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
Ramotar and the former governing PPP have contended that the polls were manipulated to cheat it out of a victory, despite local and international observers saying that the process was credible.
According to Gecom’s official count, the APNU+AFC alliance secured 207, 200 votes to the PPP/C’s 202,694 votes, win both the presidency and control over the 65-seat National Assembly.
Meanwhile, moving forward, Harf said the United States urges all parties and their supporters to work together to focus their collective efforts on addressing the issues that are important to the people, including economic development, citizen security, broader social inclusion, and the protection and effective management of Guyana’s vast resources.
