The body of a young West Coast Berbice man was fished out of a trench yesterday at Borlam Turn, East Berbice, Corentyne.
A fisherman discovered Deonarine Ramsarran, called ‘Blacks,’ 20, of Bush Lot, floating in a trench. He was partly submerged along with his brother’s motorcycle, which he had taken without informing his family.
It is believed that Ramsarran may have steered off the dark turn and rode into the trench.
There were no serious wounds visible on his body, which was fished out of the water by public-spirited citizens. However, it did appear that the fish in the trench may have been feeding on him.
Ramsarran was last seen alive by his sister, Geeta Ramsarran, of Number 1 Village, Corentyne, whom he had visited on Sunday night.
The woman told Stabroek News that her brother left her residence shortly after 10 pm with the intention of returning to his Bush Lot home.
She said her family had pleaded with him to stay the night but he did not.
Stabroek News was also told that earlier on Sunday, Ramsarran was seen drinking alcohol at the Banana Liquor Bar, which is a popular bar in the community.
Geeta stated that after her brother left her premises, she called her mother and told her to look out for him. However, the mother told Stabroek News that she kept watch all night but her son did not return home. She said she called Geeta around 5.30 am and told her that Ramsarran never reached home.
The mother stated that they then launched a search for the man and made reports at police stations at Fort Wellington and Blairmont. However, the mother stated that as they were
conducting searches, they received a telephone call about someone being found in a canal at Borlam Turn. When the woman arrived on the scene, she broke down when she saw her son and she had to be consoled by relatives.
The mother said her son left with his brother’s motorcycle without the knowledge of the family.
At the scene, scores of passers-by stopped to catch a glimpse of the man’s body, which appeared to be stuck in a pose as if he were sitting on the motorcycle.
Ramsarran is survived by his parents and four siblings.
