A man was fined yesterday for threatening his wife.
However, Courtney Persaud did not go free after a court opted to remand him to prison on additional charges that he assaulted the woman as well as his brother.
Persaud was arraigned on a total of five charges when he appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Persaud pleaded guilty to three of the charges, which stated that on May 13, 2015, at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, he used abusive language and threatening language to Sharon Khan and that on April 3, 2015, he used threatening language towards Khan. Additionally, Persaud pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges, which stated that on April 3, 2015, at Diamond Housing Scheme, he assaulted Khan and Bruce Persaud.
The remorseful man tried explaining to the court that the absent victim promised to be present to drop the charges as he had apologised and reconciled with her.
Nevertheless, Magistrate Leron Daly fined him $20,000 with an alternative of four weeks in prison for the two threatening language charges, and $10,000 or two weeks in prison for the abusive language charge.
However, Persaud was remanded to prison on the assault charges, for which his next court date is June 15, 2015.
