Dear Editor,
I am in a quagmire and in need of assistance. Could you tell me what a Ministry of Business does? And while you are at it please make clear the service that a Ministry of Citizenship or a Ministry of Governance will provide. I am perplexed by the number of ministers now in Guyana. Ministers are as ubiquitous as minibuses on the streets. And what is it with all the renaming? Are we in a race for change or a race to change? At this new-found pace and rhythm, it shouldn’t be long before the Kaieteur Falls falls prey to the renaming magic wand. How about renaming Congress Place and the National Stadium and just for good measure, I’ll throw in Bourda and Stabroek Markets. Let us rename swank (citizens drink), black pudding (one people, one nation one destiny pudding), pepperpot (community hot pot), souse (public meat and vinegar infrastructure appetizer) and cook up rice (APNU mixed meal). The present government should appoint its 27th minister − a Minister of Renaming. We are a nation of just above seven hundred thousand people with 26 ministers. If this is not something to headline the next edition of `Nothing to Laugh About’ then nothing else will.
