Dear Editor,
During the tenure of the PPP/C government there were newspaper articles about two government officials who were alleged to have conducted themselves improperly with young Amerindian females.
There were newspaper articles about one of these, including allegations of physical abuse against a female from within his own staff.
At the time these incidents were made public there was much complaint from the populace, but as was the norm with the government at that time, very little was done to investigate these, though both officials publicly denied the reports.
Since the new government has made it clear that they are willing to work with all the officials from the previous administration, it means that these two are now working under this present government and therefore represent them.
Is the APNU+AFC coalition, which campaigned on having a clean and accountable government, comfortable with having these two on their staff, despite the lingering cloud of improper conduct hanging over their heads? This seems to go against the mantra of a clean and accountable government which was preached on the campaign trail.
It is therefore imperative that these allegations be investigated to determine whether these two officials are suitable to serve under this new administration. Such an investigation by this new government will prove to the people that they are genuine about ensuring that public officials conform to high standards. It will also provide the opportunity for the names of these two officials to be cleared if the allegations are proven to be false.
The expectant public expects things to be done differently this time around. Here is one such scenario which will indicate just how differently things will be done.
Yours faithfully,
