The driver of a Nissan Titan who allegedly failed to observe the 5 C’s in driving has left a Route 46 minibus badly damaged and three persons injured after failing to stop at the junction of D’urban and Smyth Street yesterday morning.
The bus which had two passengers, a child and a young lady was heading west along D’urban Street when the speeding Titan rammed into it sending it into a drain on Smyth Street before again slamming the side of the bus, an eyewitness told Stabroek News. The owner of the bus, Ashik Khan, also related a similar account of the accident.
Another man who said that he witnessed the accident related that the Titan was proceeding at a fast rate and the driver appeared to have fallen asleep at the wheel as he rammed into the bus without even applying brakes.
The child, about ten years old, sustained the most serious injuries. He was seated in the front seat of the bus at the time of the accident. He was treated and sent away.
Travis Wharton, who was the driver of the bus, sustained three lacerations to his head and he also underwent surgery to remove pieces of broken glass from the windshield of the bus which were stuck in his arm. The other passenger, a young lady had bruises about her body, Khan said.
When Stabroek News visited Khan at his residence, the damaged vehicle was parked in his yard. He said that the driver of the Titan whose name he does not know visited his home along with the police and inspected the damage the bus sustained.
The driver of the Titan has since admitted that he was at fault, Khan said, but he said that he is awaiting the investigation of the police into the accident. He said he is very grateful that no life was lost.
Khan also expressed concern at the quick release of the driver on station bail. The accident happened just after 7:00 am and by 2:00 pm, Khan said when he visited the police station he observed that the bail receipt had already been signed.
The Titan which was involved in the accident had a name, Kissoon Paul written on it and the driver appeared to be very young, Khan said.
Upon his arrival on the scene, Khan said that he observed that the youth was tightly locked in his vehicle which was heavily tinted.
