Knights dismissed West Side Warriors 59-41 in a rescheduled Open Divisional affair when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the Hard Court’ Championship continued on Wednesday.
Rearranged two weeks prior following the failure of a lighting tower, Owan Walton was the top shot for the winners at the Burnham Court on Parade Ground with 19 points. He was supported by Lloyd Bart and Akil Lewis who netted 11 and eight points correspondingly.
Netting a game high 21 points in a losing effort was Devon Murray. Continuing the fixture with only two minutes remaining in the second period and the score locked at 32-21 in Knights’ favour, the Georgetown-based side would maintain their lead as the period ended 35-21.
Knights would build on their advantage in the third stanza as they outshot the Warriors 16-11 to go into the final period ahead 51-32. Walton top scored with five points in the period compliments of a layup, a jump-shot and one free throw.
Supporting with four points from two lay-ups was Andre Mendes. Shouldering the scoring for the Warriors was Murray with four points from a lay-up and a jump-shot. With a sizeable lead at their disposal, Knights would surrender the final period as they were marginally outscored in a low scoring excursion 9-8. Once again Murray was the driving force behind the offence with six points through two lay-ups and a mid-range jumper. Top scoring in the period with four points from two lay-ups was Bart.
In the opening u-23 fixture, Plaisance Guardians downed Mandela Avenue-based unit Pepsi Sonics by a 93-69 score line. Terrence Daniels netted a game high 27 points in the win while Akeem Johnson was the next best scorer with 21 points.
Completing the win with 10 and nine points respectively were Malcolm Powder and Andrew Johnson. On the other side, Daniel Haynes top scored with 17 points while Quincy Wright supported with 16 points. Chipping in with 12 and eight points were Lemull Grant and Leron Vyphuis correspondingly. The first quarter saw Plaisance racing off to a sizeable lead as they outscored their opponents by a 31-19 margin.
The East Coast of Demerara side would maintain their advantage in the second stanza as they outshot Sonics 17-13 to go into the half leading 48-32. Sonics would then cut the deficit in the third period, outscoring Guardians 23-15 to go into the final period trailing 63-55.
Nonetheless, Guardians would seal the matchup in the final stanza as they outscored Sonics by a 30-14 margin. The action is slated to continue today at the same venue with another round of matches from 18:00hrs.
