A prisoner was yesterday charged with damaging a wall of the washroom at the Golden Grove Police Station in a bid to escape.
Dexter Ray found himself in the prisoner’s dock at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 1 after he was pointed out by other prisoners as the person who made a hole in the wall of the police station’s washroom.
Ray, however, pleaded not guilty to charges of damage to property and attempting to escape lawful custody.
The prosecution told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that on May 23rd, 2015, at the Golden Grove Police Station, Ray unlawfully and maliciously caused approximately $40,000 in damage to the northern wall of the washroom. More specifically, Ray is accused of making a four-foot wide hole in the wall and trying to escape.
The court heard that Ray and five other prisoners were placed in the washroom facilities as per usual. However, sometime after the officers went back to check on the prisoners, they noticed the hole in the wall. The other prisoner’s told the officers that Ray was responsible for the hole as he was planning to escape.
The prosecution objected to bail, while noting that it is very likely that there will be other charges laid against Ray. The Chief Magistrate subsequently denied him bail and remanded him to prison. His next court date is June 8th, when the matter will be heard at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
