‘Summer’ buys

We have become fixated with using the word “summer” for the months July and August and having adapted the season terminology, we also take everything that comes with it.

When North Americans make their wardrobe change to accommodate the warm temperature, we are right there with them. Of course, we’re wearing the same type of clothes all year round, but everyone wants a new wardrobe for this period.

I get that kids are out of school, people take time off work and generally people just seem to have more time on their hands for fun. However, I do think it’s quite bizarre to indulge in a new wardrobe for two months. Nevertheless, the pressure is there and we just end up getting sucked into the new clothes hype.

20141115the last wordI don’t think one should dive hardcore into trends during this period. As we all know “summer” is all year round in Guyana; in case some people missed the memo. We need to focus on dressing for activities that are relevant to Guyana as opposed to the whole season thing.

I find that during these months there are loads of weddings, families visiting from abroad and people going on holiday. I picked out three pieces I think everyone should have in their wardrobe for these two months in particular. They are not trend pieces which means they are functional all year round and timeless to an extent.

The wedding reception

I am so over the typical chiffon- dress, wedding-guest look with its loads of beading and sequins; so unbelievably tacky! Growing up, I saw women debating whether to wear gold and silver shoes to attend weddings and settling for this one type of dress.

I think one should arm oneself with a gown and particularly one that could be worn repeatedly and not just only for a wedding. Something elaborate,

but yet still quite simple. I picked this one up from Cameg’s Fashion House. The fabric is absolutely lush! The bottom of the dress is extremely grand

however, it isn’t heavy or hard to control. You also don’t need to expense yourself with new shoes as no one is going to get to see them.

 The night out

There is usually an increase in parties and social events during this period. With Jamzone and all that jazz happening around this time, you are bound to have a few social nights out. I think a club/ cocktail-like dress is very necessary. Cocktails dresses are like staples so invest in a good one and don’t hold back. Do get one with too much print, because it becomes hard for you to dress it up or dress it down for later use. Get one with

a solid colour since this allows you to change the look with accessories over a period of time. I got this one from Colors on Robb Street. I am tired of using black for nights out; it’s just so depressing.

 The floral must

I love a good floral midi skirt. Florals are like the unspoken fashion must for anywhere with sunshine. This is one is perfect for a holiday piece if you are off to Aruba or Bridgetown or if you just fancy dressing up during your annual leave. It’s basic and you could re-use for church or another conservative occasion.

I don’t think that because denim is trending everyone should be laced in it for the entire “summer.” I think we need to realistic with our choices and think of how we will incorporate the pieces in our wardrobe for the rest of the year. Trends will come go but timelessness is forever.
