Ahead of a planned “Mega Clean-up” this week, environmental activist Sherod Duncan took to the streets of Georgetown yesterday to recruit citizens in the ongoing campaign to clean the city and keep it that way.

Duncan, outfitted as “Captain Clean,” told citizens he was eager to confront the garbage scourge that has been plaguing the city.

Duncan is behind the clean-up activities spearheaded by the ‘Let’s Keep Georgetown Clean’ group, which is an assembly of almost two dozen organisations that are collaborating with the hope of restoring Georgetown’s previous status as Garden City.

The group has been vigorously supporting the cleanup efforts which started when the APNU+AFC coalition won the May 11, elections.

Duncan said the aim of the ‘Lets Keep Georgetown Clean’ group is to raise an awareness among the general public about cleanliness and keeping the environment clean.

The appearance of “Captain Clean” is part of the group’s efforts. As “Captain Clean,” Duncan said he will be on the lookout for persons who are littering.

Also planned is a “Celebrity Mega Clean-up” on Friday that will coincide with World Environment Day and for which Duncan said the group has garnered support from some local personalities.

Some of the personalities who are already on board are former Miss Guyana Ruqayyah Boyer, singers Jackie Hangover and Alabama, and writer Ruel Johnson, amongst others, Duncan said.

Some of the companies that have also supported the group’s efforts are Laparkan Shipping, Courts, the Bank of Guyana and Camex Restaurants Inc.

The group aims to mobilise 500 persons for the clean-up and Duncan said it is also hoping to engage the ministers of government and the president in the activity.
