A serving member of the Guyana Police Force was yesterday fined $15,000 after he pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from a colleague.
Kevin Veeram was accused of stealing 21 beers, 10 Maltas and two bottles of coca cola, a total value of $6,345, property of Christopher Dhanraj.
According to the facts read in court, Veeram had stashed the items in a drain while he was assisting Dhanraj in removing the beverages from the King’s Plaza Hotel. It was further related that persons saw Veeram hide the items and notified Dhanraj resulting in him being arrested and charged.
Before handing down her ruling, Magistrate Ann McLennan said to Veeram, “If it doesn’t belong to you it’s called stealing. Next time you want something ask first.”
Veeram was fined $15,000 or alternatively three weeks in prison.
