Three swimmers on Sunday took their gold medal count to five apiece on the second day of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Independence National Long Course championships at the National Aquatic Centre.
Leon Seaton, Aleka Persaud and Paul Mahaica continued their dominance on day two of the championships advancing the tally of medals they won on Saturday’s opening day while winning two golds medals each were Onika George, Mario King and Satyanand Ramlagan.
In the boys’ eight years and under category, Mahaica followed up his three gold medals on Saturday with two more in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle events.
Persaud also added to her three gold count gained on Saturday
with two more gold medals in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle races while Seaton showcased his talent in the 9-10 age category with wins in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events in addition to the 100m freestyle race.
Lian Winter also had a good day in the pool, securing gold medals in three events, the 50m and 100m breaststroke along with the 100m freestyle in the girls’ 9-10 age group.
In similar fashion to her younger sibling Paul, Kenita Mahaica finished atop of the girls’13-14 age group capturing gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
Several other swimmers returned outstanding performances in some highly competitive races. Hannibal Gaskin survived fierce battles from Omar Adams to take gold in the boys’ 15-17 100m butterfly and freestyle races while in the girls’ 11-12 category, Jadyn George claimed the 400m freestyle race and later defeated her twin sister Danielle to win gold medals in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events.
Antonio Hussein won gold medals in the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 50m breaststroke events in the boys’ 13-14 class while Nathan Hackett took the 100m breaststroke gold and Sam Clarke the 200m backstroke gold.
Brittany van Lange clocked the fastest time by a female on the day as she swam her way to victory in the 100m freestyle girls’ 18 years and over event.
She also claimed gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke races in the said class.
Tommy Olaleye claimed gold in the 11-12 boys’ 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke races while Sekhel Tzedeq won a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke event. Danielle George, swimming in the girls’ 11-12 group won gold the 50m breaststroke event.
