Sixteen teams for knockout fest today

The Pouderoyen tarmac on the West Demerara will serve as the curtain raiser when the third edition of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets National Championship commences today with eight knockout fixtures.

With a new champion slated to be crowned following Queen Street Tigerbay’s failure to qualify from the Georgetown zone, the opening match of the night at 19:30hrs will pit Georgetown champs North Ruimveldt against Linden unit Wisroc.

In the second fixture at 20:00hrs, Linden winner Amelia’s Ward Russians will lock horns with Globe Yard while West Demerara titleholders West Side Ballers will face off with Berbice side Unruly Gang from 20:30hrs.

The fourth match of the night will then pit West Front Road-Gold is Money against Berbice holders Manchester Boys from 21:00hrs. Upon the conclusion of a 30 minutes interval, the fifth fixture will witness Leopold Street opposing East Coast Demerara unit Nabaclis from 21:30hrs.

Festival City Warriors will then take centre stage at 22:00hrs when they face off with Melanie-B while Sparta Boss will tackle Patentia Street Ballers in the seventh fixture at 22:30hrs. The final match of the night will see Beterverwagting (BV)-A tackling Showstoppers from 23:00hrs.

The championship which will run from June 5th-7th, features 16 teams from five different zones competing for over one million dollars in cash and prizes. The competing zones are Georgetown, West Demerara, East Coast of Demerara, Linden and Berbice.

Representing the Georgetown zone are North Ruimveldt, Festival City, Leopold Street, Sparta Boss, Globe Yard and West Front Road-Gold is Money while Amelia’s Ward Russians and Wisroc will participate on behalf of the Linden zone.

The Berbice participants will be Manchester Boys and Unruly Gang while the East Coast of Demerara will be represented by Beterverwagting (BV)-A, Melanie-B and Nabaclis. Competing on behalf of the West Demerara section will be West Side Ballers, Showstoppers and Patentia Street Ballers.

The tournament victor will earn the right to represent the country at the Caribbean Championship slated to be held in Jamaica from June 26th-29th. They will also earn the championship trophy and the $600,000 first prize.

On the other hand, the second, third and fourth positioned teams will pocket $250,000, $150,000 and $100,000 correspondingly and the respective accolade.
