At about 1805h. today, police ranks responded to a report of threatening behaviour in which Regan Richards, 18 years, of One Mile Extension, Wismar, who is reported to be mentally unstable, was armed with a cutlass and chasing down residents.
Richards, the police said, was arrested and taken into custody at the Wisroc Police Outpost.
The circumstances are not yet clear, but while in custody at the Outpost Regan Richards managed to overpower Police Constable Victor Fausette and took away his service revolver. He then shot the police rank above his left ear and escaped with the firearm, police said.
Acting on information received police ranks subsequently went to his home where they came under fire from Richards. The police returned fire, hitting him to his body. He was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police service revolver, with six spent shells, has been recovered.
Police Constable Fausette has been admitted to hospital.
