An escapee from the police outpost at Wisroc was shot dead in a confrontation yesterday with law enforcers after he had shot a cop in his head.
The police said that eighteen-year-old Regan Richards was shot dead in a confrontation with them after he shot Police Constable Victor Fausette in his head, leaving him gravely wounded.
Fausette is at the Georgetown Public Hospital and unable to breathe on his own after being shot with his own service revolver.
The police say that Fausette had responded to complaints by residents of Wismar, Linden of an armed man brandishing a cutlass and chasing residents in the community. When he arrived he took Richards of One Mile Extension, Wismar into custody. Richards was said to have been mentally unstable.
Once the two men were at the Wisroc Police Outpost, the police say that an altercation occurred at which point Richards overpowered Fausette and took away his service weapon. He then proceeded to shoot the officer in his head and fled the scene.
The Guyana Police Force reported that additional officers responded and while Fausette was rushed to the Mackenzie Hospital, Richards was tracked down at his home where he allegedly opened fired on police and was shot dead. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mackenzie Hospital.
Stabroek News was informed that a bullet is lodged in Fausette’s head.
The officer’s mother was visibly shaken and in shock when she spoke with Stabroek News stating that she was not yet told the extent of her son’s injuries as a CT scan was still required.
According to a police officer the revolver and six spent shells were recovered.
