Akeila Wiltshire and Nyron Joseph were crowned national junior champions in their final year as the Junior National Squash Championships, sponsored by Woodpecker Products Limited and hosted by the Guyana Squash Association (GSA.) in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel ended yesterday at the Georgetown Club.
Wiltshire defeated her sister Larissa in the final of the girls’ U19 category winning 3-0 while in the boys’ U19 final, Joseph fought off a determined Ben Meckdeci to triumph 3-0. Alec Melville was third.
In the girls’ U17 final Rebecca Low and Sarah Lewis went toe-to-toe before Low won 3-2 while Meckdeci was the winner of the boys’U17 category.
Also turning in stellar performances was Makeda Harding who swept to victory in the girls’ U13 and U15 divisions and finished second to Rebecca Low in the U17 category en route to capturing the
most outstanding girl award.
Not to be outdone Shomari Wiltshire, son of former Southern Caribbean men’s champion Garfield Wiltshire was adjudged the most outstanding boy, winning the U13 division and finishing second to Alexander Cheeks in the boys’ U15 category.
The tournament featured a competitive Under 9 category which was won by Beau Fernandes and Mohryan Baksh which according to a Guyana Squash Association member Raymond Islam, augurs well for the future of the sport.
