Two Sophia residents were on Tuesday charged with robbing a couple of a quantity of valuables.
Sherwin Roberts and Chavez Alves, of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 1 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, where they pleaded not guilty to two counts of robbery.
It is alleged that on June 7th, at the Kingston seawall, Roberts and Alves, while being in the company of others, robbed Alplonsina Sutton of a $70,000 cell phone. They are also accused of robbing Makilda Brown of a BlackBerry smartphone, a quantity of cash and other valuables, amounting to a total value of $79,000.
The police’s case is that Sutton and Brown were at the Kingston seawall when the two accused rode up on a pedal cycle and robbed them. They attempted to escape but an alarm was subsequently raised and the men were arrested by police on foot patrol duty.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. He said if granted bail there is a likelihood that the defendants won’t return for their trial.
As a result, both Roberts and Alves were refused bail and the case was adjourned until June 26th.
