The four boxers that competed at the Pan Am Qualifiers last weekend in Mexico will not return today with any hardware, but with a wealth of experience that augurs well for the future.
This is according to president of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle.
Ninvalle was adamant that the team of young Simon Pures which recorded one victory in total will only become more formidable after being exposed to such a high calibre of the sweet science.
“Despite coming up short, they had outstanding performances against more seasoned competitors,” said Ninvalle. “You can obviously say that they didn’t qualify for the Pan Am next month but there were a lot of positives.
Ninvalle pointed out that lightweight Diwani Lampkin and junior welterweight Jason Phillips are still teens and are potential prospects for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
In Mexico, middleweight Dennis Thomas was the lone fighter that was able to secure a victory. He defeated Trinidad’s Aaron Prince but lost to Raul Sanchez of the Dominican Republic in the quarter final.
In their opening bouts, Dellon Charles (bantamweight) and Lampkin lost 3-0 to Tafari Ebanks of the Cayman Islands and Kevin Luna of Guatemala respectively.
Phillips lost 2-1 to Anival Diaz of Nicaragua.
The pugilists along with Coach of the sojourn, Sebert Blake were scheduled to return this morning at 7:30 on a Caribbean Airlines flight. (Emmerson Campbell)
