Demerara’s senior and under-19 female cricketers wrapped up their first week of training ahead of Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) inter-county competitions.
Yesterday some 15 players who are vying for places on the Demerara senior and junior female teams were engaged in physical and technical training at the GCB’s La Bonne Intention training facility.
The final session focused on the players’ fitness and the development of their technical facets as was most of the first week where the players also had undergone some mental exercises.
According to a very optimistic coach Clive Grimmond, it was a good first week of training as the players were fully responsive in all of the sessions.
Grimmond indicated that the next week of training, which is set to commence on Tuesday and end Saturday would be very similar as he wants to see improvement in the players’ fitness as well as their technical features.
He also hinted at some outdoor activities once there is change in the atmosphere.
“Besides the indoor training at LBI the players will also engage in game scenarios once the weather pattern changes,” he declared.
Some 31 players were invited to the training, however, only 15 have attended to date. Most are seasoned players in both Demerara and the national side along with two new comers.
Grimmond said the fact that only about half of the players turned up did not hamper the preparation, since he was able to work with those in attendance.
The tournament was last week postponed due to rain, but that was a blessing according to Grimmond, who said he got to put in some additional work with the players.
After two delays to name the squad the coach said the names will reach the media this week, since the team is likely to play soon.
The Demerara training is being facilitated by Grimmond, with Latchman Yadram his assistance. GCB’s Territorial Development Officer (TDO) Colin Stuart was also a part of one of the sessions.
