A Route 42 minibus conductor died on Saturday morning after he lost control of the car he was driving and ran into a canal along the Diamond Housing Scheme Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The accident, which occurred at approximately 12:45 am, claimed the life of Travis Thompson, 26, of Lot 53, Land of Canaan, EBD.
The dead man’s father, William Thompson stated that Travis was coming out of the Diamond Housing Scheme Access Road at the time of the accident when he lost control of the car and plunged into the nearby canal. It appears also that Travis was under the influence of alcohol. The car was pulled out of the canal sometime after the accident with the assistance of those nearby after which Travis’s body was taken out and he was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
His father said that after receiving the news from someone via a telephone call he rushed to the hospital but his son had already been pronounced dead and he wasn’t able to see what injuries he sustained. He noticed, however, that there was mud around his nose and mouth. William also said that when he visited the police station where the car is being kept there wasn’t much damage to it.
The man related that he last saw his son around 7 pm on Friday before he had left home. He added that it was customary that Travis would go out in the evenings, especially on the weekends to hang out with friends and he would be out late.
He said he believed that Travis may have drowned but is awaiting a post-mortem examination on the cause of death.
Travis was described as someone who was well-known to the community and very quiet and friendly.
