The Guyana Bar Association has launched The New Guyana Bar Review at a function held recently at Moray House.
According to a press release, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams attended the event, held on May 21. Outgoing Bar Association president Ronald Burch-Smith congratulated Williams on his appointment and thanked him for making an event sponsored by the Bar Association as the venue for his first public statement as attorney general.
In response, Williams congratulated the association on its continued efforts to publish the law journal which is the fourth volume of December, 2014. He also congratulated the GBA on its efforts to facilitate continuing legal education for its members.
Touching briefly on the contentious issue of the admission of University of Guyana law students seeking admission to the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad, Williams undertook to have dialogue with the Council of Legal Education. He intimated that the new administration would look into the possibility of a local law school.
The journal has articles contributed by various members of the Bar including Teni Housty, Timothy Jonas and Murseline Bacchus. There is also an article on Dispute Resolution by Justice Desiree P Bernard, retired judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice.
In closing, Burch-Smith thanked the sponsors of The New Guyana Bar Review: the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, Republic Bank, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry and John Fernandes Limited for their financial support in printing the publication.
