A West La Penitence youngster was refused bail yesterday after it was alleged that he held a woman at gunpoint and robbed her of her jewellery.
Theon Simon, 20, of 53 West La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 5, yesterday where he denied the charge read to him.
Simon was accused of being armed with a gun and robbing Marcia Rampersaud of two gold rings valued $40,000 and her $20,000 gold chain, on June 13, in West La Penitence.
Prosecutor Simone Payne objected to bail, noting the seriousness and the prevalence of the offence.
In addition, the prosecutor said that the articles mentioned in the charge were discovered in the defendant’s pants pocket after he was arrested.
The police and other witnesses positively identified Simon during an identification parade, Payne added.
After the accused was asked to enter a plea, he stood speechless as the court waited, the magistrate then opted to re-read to him the charge.
However, after the charge was read to him a second time, Simon maintained his silence and on being prompted by the magistrate, requested time to think.
After deliberating for a while, Simon said that he was not guilty.
He was then remanded to prison and was ordered to return to court on June 18.
