The police are currently seeking a Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) engineer after an illegal firearm was found in the room he occupies at the entity’s Mahdia location, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said yesterday.
Blanhum told Stabroek News last evening that around 2045 hours on Monday, police acting on information received went to the GGMC mining station at Mahdia where they conducted a search. A 9 mm pistol and several rounds were found in a room occupied by the engineer who was not there at the time.
Meanwhile, he said that another firearm was also found on Monday night but this time in the city.
He explained that around 1955 hours ranks on a police patrol recovered a .38 revolver and six live rounds on a man who had attempted to flee.
He said that the ranks had observed two men on a pedal cycle at Light and Cummings streets. The men on seeing the ranks began acting suspiciously according to Blanhum who said that the ranks attempted to intercept the men. One managed to escape while the other was apprehended.
Blanhum revealed that the man who was found in possession of the firearm will be placed on an identification parade to determine whether he was involved in any of the recent gunpoint robberies committed by persons on pedal cycles.
Ballistic tests on the weapons will be conducted shortly.
