Canje Knights sealed their berth to the final downing home side Fyrish Black Sharks 83-66 when the inaugural NPG Packaging first division basketball competition continued on Sunday at the Fyrish Basketball Court.
Steve Roopnarine top scored for the winners with 24 points while Kevon Emmanuel provided capable support with 21 points. Chipping in with 12 and 11 points correspondingly were Rayan Emmanuel and Damion Hunte.
On the losing side, Jowell Fraser registered a game high 32 points while Keenan Williams, Linden Joseph and Carl Logon supported with 10, seven and four points respectively. In the first period, the visitors would take an early advantage as they outscored the home side 27-12.
They would then maintain their lead in the second period as they went into the half-time interval ahead 40-26. Knights would then build on their advantage in the third stanza, outscoring the home side 18-12 to take a 58-38 lead.
With the matchup already decided due to their huge lead going into the final period, Knights would be marginally outscored by the home side 28-25.
Action in the tourney will continue on Sunday at the same venue with the second semi-final matchup between Rose Hall Town Jammers against Smythefield Rockers.
The Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) sanctioned tournament features a total of seven teams from both the East and West Berbice area. The other teams competing in the tourney are Hopetown Steelers, New Amsterdam Warriors and Ithaca Hard-Liners.
The winning team will receive the championship trophy and a financial incentive while the runner-up will pocket the respective accolade and a financial incentive. Similarly incentives will also be awarded to individual players.
