New Silver City Secondary and L’Aventure Secondary sealed their berth to the next round defeating Wisburg Secondary and West Demerara Secondary when the 5th edition of the Digicel Secondary Schools Championship kicked off yesterday.
Over at the Leonora Sports Facility, L’Aventure Secondary overcame West Demerara Secondary by a 2-1 margin.
Jeiel Jansen opened the scoring for West Demerara in the 12th minute, with a powerful right footed shot into the middle of the net, after racing away from marker to be in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
Nonetheless, Dan Boston would equalize for L’Aventure as he netted through a 62nd minute strike. Andeole Bowman would seal the come-from-behind win as he found the back of the net seven minutes later.
At the Wisburg Secondary ground, New Silver City Secondary stunned the home side Wisburg Secondary by a 3-2 score line.
Tyreek McAllister, Brian Johnson and Shane Haynes netted for the winners in the 25th, 50th and 58th minutes respectively.
On target in the loss were Compton Caesar and Jermin Moore in the 19th and 66th minutes respectively. The home side would also be reduced to 10 players as Eldridge Williams was shown a red card in the 68th minute.
The third slated match of the opening day at the Ministry of Education ground between Richard Ishmael Secondary and Guyana Trust College was rescheduled due to a waterlogged playing surface.
Prior to the commencement of the matchup at the Leonora Facility, a march past featuring the participating schools occurred, with the Director of Sports Christopher Jones and Digicel Marketing Director Jacqueline James meeting the respective participants.
James opened the event with the ceremonial kick-off. The action continues today with four matches across several venues at 15:30hrs respectively. At the Skeldon Community Centre ground, Tagore Secondary will lock horns with Manchester Secondary.
At the Tucville ground, David Rose Secondary will oppose Tucville Secondary while Mackenzie High will oppose Linden Foundation at the Wisburg ground. The final fixture will witness Friendship Secondary tackling Apex Secondary at the Grove Community ground.
The event will then continue tomorrow with five matches at 15:30hrs. Houston Secondary will oppose St. Mary’s Secondary at Tucville ground while Soesdyke Secondary will tackle Covent Garden at the Grove Community ground.
Over at the Leonora Sports Facility, Stewartville Secondary will lock horns with Endeavour Secondary while at the Victoria Community ground, Hope Secondary will tackle La Bonne Intention Secondary.
The final match of the day will pit New Amsterdam Technical Institute against Corentyne Secondary at the Burnham Park venue. On Saturday at 15:30hrs in the lone fixture, Harmony Secondary will oppose Kwakwani Secondary at the Wisburg Secondary.
The current titleholder is Christianburg/Wismar Secondary who has secured three consecutive championships in the four-year history of the event.
