A Mahaica Creek farmer is trying to save his 94 cows, after his ranch was once again flooded as a result of the May/June rain.
Dwarka Singh called ‘Bab’ expressed his frustration on the entire incident, saying that he had been looking for assistance since early last week but all his efforts proved futile.
The man said that he is trying to do his best to save all his cattle since they cost a lot. He had moved his 94 cows which are maintained by him and his two sons from the flooded ranch to an empty plot of land at his residence some distance away, and not affected by the flood. However, this is hard, he said since they have no grass to graze on.
Singh is blaming the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) for the flood. He explained that the NDIA built an embankment dam from Cane Grove to Flora Garden and then from Handsome Tree to Martin Burial Ground. However, these two canals have not been maintained so whenever it rains, the water raises. The flooding is caused, according to Singh, because there is no outlet to drain out the water.
He is therefore calling on the relevant authorities to look into the matter since for him if the situation continues he will be suffering huge losses.
