Guyana’s winless campaign at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships continued yesterday, losing to the Cayman Islands 61-89 in their opening Reclassification Round fixture at the Multi Sports Complex in Tortola.
Ryan Gullen led the Guyanese with 17 points and seven rebounds while the next best scorer was Keron McKenzie with 12 points. Chipping in with figures of 10 points, 10 rebounds and three assists was Travis Burnett while Shelroy Thomas netted 10 points and grabbed three rebounds.
For the winners, Jorge Ebanks netted a game-high 25 points, five rebounds and as many assists while Samuel Ogarro supported with 20 points and eight rebounds. Supporting with figures of 18 points and seven rebounds was Davion Cotterell while Shaad Ogarro registered 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Like Guyana’s earlier matchups, the first period saw them giving up an early advantage as Cayman Islands raced off to an 18-10 lead. Cayman Islands would continue to put distance between the two sides, outscoring Guyana in the second period 28-14 to take a 46-24 lead.
The third period would witness the Cayman Islands further solidifying their advantage, building an unassailable advantage as they out-shot Guyana 20-14 to take a 66-35. With the fixture already decided, Guyana would outscore Cayman Islands 26-23 in the final period.
On Friday in their last group fixture, Guyana went down to rivals Suriname 48-81 margin at the same venue.
McKenzie led the scoring for the losers with 15 points while the next best scorer with eight points was Burnett. Chipping in with five points and six rebounds was Gullen while Chris Williams shot his way to five points.
For the Dutchmen, Sergio Randamiede led the way with 13 points and five rebounds while
Yves Goedschalk provided capable support with 12 points.
Earl Sabajo netted nine points, five rebounds and three assists, Daryll Tolud netted nine points, Xavier Elburg registered eight points and Bruce Zamuel recorded eight points and as many rebounds in the win.
The matchup promised so much after Suriname took a marginal 15-10 advantage following the end of the first quarter. However that would not be the case as the Dutchmen pulled away in the second stanza, recording 28 points while restricting Guyana to 15 to take a 43-25 lead.
The low scoring third quarter would see the matchup continuing in the same trend as Suriname outscored the Guyanese 14-9 to go into the final stanza in total control at 57-34.
Suriname would then complete the lopsided result in the final period, netting another 24 points while reducing Guyana to 14. Action in the event is slated to continue today at the same venue with another round of Reclassification fixtures.
