Guyana’s hopes at qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil were extinguished as they went down to hosts Antigua and Barbuda 2-0 in their second group match of the CFU 2016 Olympic Qualifiers yesterday at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St John’s.
Needing a win to keep their hopes alive of qualifying out of the group following their opening 2-0 loss to Cuba, Guyana got off to a nightmare start as Caledonia AIA-forward Elvis Thomas gave the home side the early lead compliments of a third-minute conversion.
He would then put the game beyond the Guyanese, ending their Olympic dream as he sealed his first half double with a 29th minute attempt. Guyana will now end their campaign against cellar occupants Aruba tomorrow, after the latter went down to Cuba by an 11-1 score line in their second fixture. The home side will now face off with the Cubans in their final match of the group to decide who will advance to the next round tomorrow.
