Jamal Goodluck and Tandy Primo are the 2015 Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) doubles champions after a sterling performance gifted them the title yesterday at the bank’s recreational facility.
The pair outplayed all of their counterparts in the round robin before defeating Fiona Bushell and Martin Campbell in the finals. The pair won the clash 6/2 to win their first combined title.
Goodluck is also the singles men’s novice champion after winning against Akeem Bailey in the finals.
This weekend, the novices concluded their matches. Bailey took on Delon Fraser in the semifinals. Fraser’s backhand was placed under pressure by the deep shots Bailey crafted. Bailey secured a spot in the finals after capitalizing on a break and served out the set at 7/5.
He then faced Goodluck in the finals. Goodluck opened the account of the match with a hold and break, then a lead of 4/2. It appeared that the novice title was finally in reach until Bailey mounted a counterattack with heavy loops and deep shots to put Goodluck on the defence. The game eventually tied at 5/5 and hope was dwindling for Goodluck. After serving his first ace of the match, he seemed refuelled and focused as he launched an attack to hold serve and set up two match points. He clenched the GBTI Open 2015 title with a win of 7/5 over Bailey.
In other results from Thursday’s fixture, Afruica Gentle defeated Shivani Persaud 6/4, 7/5. The tournament will continue today with several matches at the said venue.
