Dynas Ravens crowned basketball champs

Dynas Ravens were crowned the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) 1st Division Hard-Court Champs, defeating arch-rivals TGH Pacesetters 74-61 on Saturday at the Burnham Court.

In the battle of the unbeaten teams, Ryan Gullen top scored with 21 points in the win while Ryan Stephney was the next best scorer with 18 points. Supporting with 14, nine and eight points respectively were Dominic Vicente, Marlon Rodrigues and Jermaine Slater.

On the other side, Travis Burnett led the losers with 21 points while Ruel Ritch, Stephon Gillis and Travis Williams chipped in with 10 points each.

Leading 6-5 during the opening three minutes of the first period, Ravens would extend their advantage, securing a 13-0 run to take a 19-5 lead with 2:55 remaining on the clock.

Pacesetters would then battle back in the final two minutes, netting 11 points while reducing Ravens to five points to close out the period trailing 24-16.

Rodrigues top scored in the period with nine points studded with two three-pointers and a three-point play while Vicente, Gullen and Slater chipped in with five, four and four points correspondingly.

The second period would see Pacesetters reducing the lead as they outscored Ravens 14-10 to go into the period trailing 34-30. Gillis led all scorers in the period with six points compliments of two three- pointers at 2:46 and 46 seconds remaining.

Assisting in the scoring with three points each were Williams and Ritch. For Raven’s, Gullen and Stephney netted four points apiece. The closely fought contest would continue in the third period as Pacesetters out-hustled Ravens 20-18 to head into the final period behind 52-50.

Burnett and Williams shouldered the scoring burden in the period with seven points each. Burnett opened his account with a three-pointer at 7:15 before nailing a jump shot and a layup.

Williams on the other hand, netted two jump-shots and three pointer at 8:12 while veteran shot-blocker Royston Siland chipped in with four points.

In the case of Ravens, Gullen scored eight points compliments of a three-point play, a three pointer at 4:08 and a layup while Slater and Stephney added four points.

Despite taking the momentum into the final quarter, Pacesetters would inexplicably lose the plot as they were outmanoeuvred 22-11. Stephney had a monstrous output in the final period, netting a game high 10 points in the period through six free throws and two layups.

Supporting with seven points compliments of two layups and a three-pointer at 5:32 was Vicente while Gullen netted five points through a layup and a three-pointer with only five seconds remaining in the match.

Top scoring for Pacesetters in the quarter were Burnett and Ritch who scored five and four points each. In the earlier fixture, Republic Bank Nets crushed West Side Warriors 117-53. Veteran guard Pelham Doris top scored in the rout which witnessed 17 three-pointers with 22 points.

He was supported by Mortimer Roberts, Michael Richards, Fabian Johnson and Mortimer Williams who netted 21, 21, 19 and 14 points respectively. For the losers, Devon Murray top scored with a game high 24 points.

Assisting with 12, eight and seven points respectively were Orin Joseph, Deon Barnes and Samuel Hollingsworth. The presentation ceremony will occur on Wednesday July 1st from 10:30am at Starr Computers.
