Team Guyana got their Guinness Caribbean Street Football Challenge off to a positive start as they secured a quarterfinal berth, clinching two wins and suffering one loss in their group campaign on Saturday in Jamaica.
Positioned in group-A alongside the likes of Trinidad and Tobago, hosts Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana claimed the top spot in the group with six points and a goal difference of +4 after defeating Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 and St. Vincent and the Grenadines 1-0.
Guyana’s only blemish came against the home side who they lost to by a 2-1 margin. In group-B, Barbados emerged as the winner while St. Kitts and Nevis, Aruba and St. Lucia finished in the second, third and fourth positions respectively.
Up to press time, Guyana was slated to face off with St. Lucia in the knockout round while the other elimination fixtures were Trinidad and Tobago against Aruba, Barbados against St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the host nation against St. Kitts and Nevis.
To date, Team Guyana’s best place in the annual event is a silver medal finish. This was achieved by both Back Circle and Queen Street Tigerbay in the 2011 and 2014 editions respectively.
