The Rotary Club of Demerara installed Renata Chuck-A-Sang as its new president and a new board at its 22nd installation ceremony hosted on Tuesday evening at the Pegasus Hotel.
Chuck-A-Sang shared Rotary International’s chosen theme for 2015-2016, ‘Be a gift to the world’, and encouraged every member to make the theme real in the coming Rotary year by seeking to add value to the lives of persons in their communities. “We can do this through the projects we choose to do and the way we demonstrate what [it] means to be Rotarian,” she said, according to a press release.
Rotary clubs worldwide conduct projects under the following areas of focus: peace and conflict prevention/resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy and economic and community development.
In the coming year the new president indicated that the club will continue with ongoing projects in literacy, elder care and youth development. Chuck-A-Sang also proposed new projects in the area of gender-based violence.
She also revealed that based on a request by incoming District Gover-nor Milton Innis of Barbados to highlight the disability dyslexia, she plans to raise awareness about the issue in Guyana and work along with the other local Rotary clubs in this endeavour.
Chuck-A-Sang thanked immediate past president Gillian Mohabeer and the outgoing board for their leadership demonstrated over the past 12 months. She also thanked the club for the confidence they have reposed in her and the incoming board.
The new board comprises president –elect Ramesh Seebarran; Mohabeer, vice president, Eon Caesar; secretary, Janelle Blackman; treasurer, Shaneeza St Aubyn and the following committee chairs: Pam Welch, Club Administra-tion; Marcel Gaskin, Membership; Onecia Johnson, Public Relations, Rhonda La Fargue, Service Projects and Lance Hinds, Rotary Foundation. Additionally, La Fargue was awarded Rotarian of the Year.
Meanwhile, Mohabeer thanked members and sponsors for their support over the past year, particularly Digicel, ANSA McAl Trading, Bounty Farm, Scotiabank and ReadyMix Cement.
