A truck driver was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with stealing wood and later escaping from police custody.
George Gildharie, 36, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 2, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
It was alleged that Gildharie stole 30 Wallaba posts, valued $60,000, from owner Shameer Yusuf, between June 19th and June 26th, 2015, at Roraima Road, Upper Berbice.
Additionally, it was alleged that he escaped lawful police custody at the Kwakwani Police station on June 29th, 2015.
No further details about the charge were presented but there was an objection to bail in light of the contention that Gildharie had tried to escape custody before. As a result, he was denied bail and remanded to prison.
His next court date is July 17th, 2015, when the case will be called at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
