A last minute penalty by Philippe Marignan helped St Joseph’s High School secure an emphatic come-from-behind victory over Bishops’ High School yesterday in the Digicel School Championships.
Marignan played a major role for the Woolford Avenue side on the sloppy Ministry of Education Sports Complex ground but was unlucky on a number of occasions.
He was finally rewarded when he found the back of the net off a penalty kick to give his team the 2-1 victory a few seconds before stoppage time.
St Joseph’s gained the penalty through a handled ball by Bishops’ Makayah Smith who was unfortunate to get a hand on the ball as he tried to clear it from the danger.
Teenager Marignan at one stage had to fight cramps in an effort to secure the win for his school. He received support from 13-year-old Beacon player Jonathan Rossan who was the most skillful player on display during the exhilarating clash.
The eventual winners started the second half trailing 0-1 but thanks to some creative plays in the midfield, the ball was able to reach the right boot of Lemar Williams (60th) and was rocketed past the Bishops’ goal keeper for the equalizer. That was subsequent to a missed penalty kick by Bishops’ Tyrese Souvenir who sent the ball over the post after being fouled by St. Joseph’s Jasanie Austin some 10 minutes into the second half.
Earlier, in the first half, both teams fought tirelessly in the rain to score, but it was Bishops’ which went ahead, compliments of a Joel Morrison goal on the stroke of half-time.
