Family of biker in Providence fatal crash hope to see charges laid soon

Two months after a biker was hit down on Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and subsequently died, his family members are keenly awaiting word on the fate of the driver of the vehicle.

Quincy Greene, 26, of Lot 36 Side Line Dam, Mocha, EBD, succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Sunday May 3. However, while his family believes that he died on that day hospital officials only pronounced him dead on Monday, May 4 after conducting tests. They also allege that he was neglected when he was transferred to the hospital from the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was initially taken after the accident.

The accident occurred around 10.30 pm on May 3, a few minutes after Greene left home for Georgetown to meet his girlfriend.

Stabroek News was told that Greene and a friend were both riding motorcycles and were heading in the same direction. However, while he was crossing between the National Stadium and the Princess Hotel, a car struck Greene off his motorcycle. He was pitched some distance away. He was picked up and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre by public-spirited citizens. After his condition worsened, he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, June Greene, the mother of the dead man, said that she along with other relatives has been continuously visiting the police station to follow up the matter with no success. The woman added though that despite the slow pace of the investigation, she and her family are still hoping for justice or at least some sort of satisfaction. “Up to this date we haven’t receive a word of comfort… even a sorry or so from the driver, although we came face to face with him a day, when the police were on the scene investigating,” June said.

She informed this newspaper that the family has since learnt that the driver is a doctor and was able to gather some information on him but they are questioning why this matter is being treated differently from others of same nature. The dissatisfied mother said every time she and her husband visit the police station they are being “pushed around.”

On the last occasion, they were told that the file was sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. The woman said they are hoping that charges will be laid soon and the matter would not just flop.

A post-mortem examination preformed on Greene had revealed that he died as a result of haemorrhage to the brain and fractured spine.
