Indian Action Committee concerned over crime

The Indian Action Committee (IAC)—formerly the Indian Arrival Committee—has voiced concern over the “numerous incidents of crime” in many parts of Guyana.

According to a press release issued yesterday by the IAC, its concern is not confined just to the high number of major crimes but at the plethora of petty related incidents that continue to plague the country. As a result, it called for “mechanisms to mitigate the current spate of crime to be given utmost priority and urged the government to adapt a zero-tolerance approach in an effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The IAC’s call came on the same day that President David Granger convened a high-level meeting to address the recent escalation of violent crime

A few weeks ago, the IAC said, its executives had expressed its concerns about the crime situation when they met with Granger and “while the response was heartening,” it believes, “there is need for a more focused and multi-faceted approach.”

Further, the IAC said, “it will support pertinent related interventions to bring the situation under control.”

The IAC also issued a call to members of the public to be “extremely careful” while in the process of transacting business and to report any suspicious activities. “The movement of large sums of cash, when necessary, must be approached with exceptional care being mindful of the related risks. All must remain vigilant and any suspicious activity or persons must be reported,” it said, while also calling for law enforcement agencies to be in a state of readiness for any necessary response, “which must uncompromisingly be, swift and targeted.”
