National cyclist Geron Williams showed his fine form in Monday’s CARICOM Day ‘Wheat Up Classic’, winning three events including the 30-lap feature.
Showing tenacity and grit, Williams shrugged off the challenges of Team Evolution’s Michael Anthony (2nd) and Raul Leal (3rd) to emerge winner of the main event of the NAMILCO sponsored criterium fixture.
Akeem Wilkinson also of Team Evolution, Chris Holder (Team Coco’s) and Silvio Innis filled out the top six paid positions.
The win at the breezy Seawall Bandstand offered Williams a vital rebound from his performance during last month’s National Cycling Championships in which he finished third in the Road Race.
Besides the winner’s trophy, Williams pocketed three sprint prizes, the first prize of $30,000 and one year’s supply of Wheat Up cereal compliments of the meet’s sponsor, NAMILCO.
The U.S. based Williams made hay in the sunshine before the feature, winning the Category 1-3 event ahead of Anthony and Alanzo Greaves, and besting Greaves and Paul DeNobrega in the points’ race.
Other winners in the 12th annual event which was organized by president of the Roraima Bikers Club, Brian Allen included: Greaves (win and out), Leal (Category 4), Keon Thomas (Mountain Bike), Keomo Logan (Juveniles 12-14), Kennard Lovell (Veterans over-50), Warren McKay (Veterans under-50), Simeon Chee (BMX 6-9), Jonathan Jagdeo (BMX 12-14) and Marica Dick (female).
