(Trinidad Express) Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco) will celebrate his 80th birthday today.
And Radio Sweet 100FM will be playing the calypso icon’s music for 18 hours to commemorate the landmark.
Fans will enjoy gems from Sparrow’s exhaustive panoply, including the classic Jean and Dinah, Doh Back Back, Mae Mae and Education.
New York-based Sparrow was expected to return to Trinidad last night for the occasion.
Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Dr Lincoln Douglas hailed Sparrow as a “living icon” and invited the public to view the exhibition dedicated to Sparrow at the Ministry’s Culture Division, 51-55 Frederick Street, Port of Spain.
Its theme is “Treasures From The Hideaway”.
When contacted, his daughter Karen Francisco said: “I feel proud the Government has taken the time to play my dad’s music. I feel honoured to be his child. I feel honoured to know his ability has made a difference in Trinidad and Tobago and the world. It can impact on everyone. I feel moved and inspired the Ministry and Radio 100FM decided to play his music. It is because of his amazing self-expression that we are still learning from his fountain of knowledge. I am honoured they would remember him in such a profound way.
“From one artiste to another, thank you for being your true self. Enjoy your day. At 80, life has only just begun. Your grandson Kona sends him a big bear hug and a kiss,” she added.
